Electrolyte deposition by screen printing

To save our sweat loving mother, we absolutely need to depose the second part of the cell. In the previus article “Anode fabrication by tape casting” I explained you how to make the first step of the fuel cell. Our duty is to finish it as soon as possible, so be attentive and discover screen printers machines.


Electrolyte is the part which permits to separate oxygen and hydrogen, and thus prevents short-circuit. But, oxygen ions created at the cathode have to travel throw the electrolyte to get to the anode and to react with hydrogen. In brief, the more thick is the electrolyte, the more difficult will be the travel of oxygen ions. It’s why we used screen printing machines to depose electrolyte, they permit to depose thin layers. As anode deposition, electrolyte deposition need to put the ceramic powder into a mixture to create a paste.

Electrolyte is deposed on the anode support throw a mask constituted of a mesh which determine the thickness of the layer. A squeegee spread the ink on the mesh, its fast and the pressure applied determine also the final thickness of the electrolyte.

The previous picture permit to see how simple is this machine, and how convenient it is to be used in an industrial manufacture. Screen printing permit to depose film with a thickness smaller than 10um !
